WHAT IS ACTON ACADEMY'S

CURRICULUM?

PART 1: PHILOSOPHY

ON ACTON ACADEMY "CURRICULUM"

What is Acton’s Curriculum?

One of the most common questions parents ask when exploring Acton is, “What is your curriculum?” At first glance, this seems like a straightforward question. However, at Acton, the answer is anything but simple—because we don’t follow a traditional curriculum. Instead, we use a learning design that prioritizes real-world skills, independent thinking, and lifelong curiosity.

A Different Approach to Learning

The Problem with Traditional Curriculums

Most curriculums are built on a fixed set of principles, often aligned with state standards or a predefined educational philosophy. While this approach provides structure, it can also limit a child’s natural curiosity and ability to explore knowledge in an organic way. The very word curriculum comes from the Latin for “racecourse”—implying a fixed path that students must follow, often without deviation. At Acton, we believe learning shouldn’t be a rigid track but an expansive journey where children can take ownership of their education and develop critical thinking skills.

Our Core Learning Principles

Rather than a strict curriculum, we evaluate learning resources based on a few key questions:

Does this relate to real-world skills? We prioritize learning experiences that connect directly to real-life applications. If a subject or program helps learners navigate real-world challenges, it is more likely to be incorporated.Does this develop critical thinking and problem-solving? Learning is not just about memorizing facts; it’s about fostering the ability to think deeply and make sound decisions.

For example, in math, we use Beast Academy, a program designed to build critical thinking and problem-solving skills rather than just teaching formulas. We chose it because it helps learners connect mathematical concepts to real-world scenarios and encourages them to struggle productively through challenges.

Learning as a Lifelong Journey

At Acton, we believe that learning is not linear but dynamic. Traditional education often follows a rigid sequence of subjects and skills, but in reality, true learning happens in a more interconnected, exploratory way.Our goal is to create an environment where students develop curiosity, ask deep questions, and pursue knowledge based on their interests and needs. Rather than confining children to a preset track, we equip them with the skills and mindset needed to become lifelong learners.

The Acton Learning Philosophy

Our approach is grounded in a simple but powerful belief:

Clear thinking leads to good decisions, good decisions lead to the right habits, the right habits forge character, and character determines destiny.

Everything we do—from the projects we design to the programs we choose—stems from this philosophy. By focusing on critical thinking, decision-making, and character development, we help young learners take charge of their education and their future.

So, What Is Acton’s Curriculum?

It’s not a one-size-fits-all program. Instead, it’s a carefully crafted learning design built on core principles that encourage real-world application, independent thinking, and lifelong curiosity.

Rather than telling learners what to think, we empower them to explore how to think—so they can forge their own path to success.
